If you are looking to add headrest monitors to your car, then you have three options available to you. You can buy headrests that already have monitors built into them, have a mechanic install them for you or you can install them yourself. If you choose one of the first two options, then all you have to do is choose a headrest that matches your car. On the other hand if you choose the last option then you are going to have to have a few tools available to you. This article assumes that you are going to be completing the job yourself.
The first thing that you will need to do is to remove the current headrest from your seat.Once you have completed this step then you need to use a pencil to trace the outline for the monitor. After you have traced it out, use a utility knife to cut an “X” from the center to each corner of the outline. The next step is to peel back the flaps and check to see if the monitor will fit in the hole that you just made. If it is not wide enough you can extend it out towards the corners of the outline. Once the opening is large enough then you can fold out the flaps and tape them down.
After you have made the opening for the monitor you can know figure out its depth. This can be easily done by measuring the depth of the monitor and scooping out the foam. This should be done a little bit at a time to prevent removing too much of the foam. Once it is the proper depth you can now insert the monitor. The monitor and its shroud is usually held into place by a screw bar or by using an epoxy. If you are using an epoxy be sure to allow sufficient drying time before moving on to the next step. After the screw bar or epoxy has been applied you can then run the wires for the monitor down the metallic bars of the headrest and insert them into the switch box for the monitor. That concludes the basic installation of the headrest monitor.
This procedure should only be attempted if you have the skills necessary to complete the job. While a headrest monitor is not a complicated thing to install yourself, it does take quite a bit of patience to make sure that it looks like it was done professionally. Another thing that can complicate this job is the installation of accessories such as DVD players or game systems. If you are not confident with performing these operations, then it may be prudent to have a professional install the headrest monitors for you.
