Brakes

How long do brakes last? Are brake jobs guaranteed? I had my brakes done not that long ago, and they feel like they are not working well. They are starting to make a little noise.

Sometimes, new brakes will make a little noise until they're completely seated on the discs. However, if it's a screeching or grinding noise, you should take it back to the shop. Brakes usually last from 30,000 to 50,000 miles, depending on how hard you use them. Some shops guarantee their brake jobs, others do not.

It really depends on the shop whether or not they are guaranteed. If you buy the brake pads at AutoZone (where we usually get ours) then THEY have a warranty. How long they last is going to greatly depend on how much you use them.

As everyone else has said, the type of driving (and braking) you do will determine how long your brakes will last. The quality of the brakes themselves will also be an influence on their longevity - lower quality or non-OEM materials will not last as long.
Manufacturers will offer a warranty on the brakes themselves against defects but not against wear, and a reputable shop will usually warranty their work.

I actually took the car back to the shop because I wanted to be sure. I really felt they were kind of screechy. They had guarantee and changed them. They couldn't argue with the screeching noise.
