Compromise

Everyone knows that the basis of every good relationship is compromise. There has to be give and take. So it came as a shock to me to be told by some random talk radio host on my way home that the American people do not want the two parties in the Congress to compromise on issues. Yes, in an ideal world it would be great if we could get things done without compromise, but in the real world nothing gets done if we don't compromise. What do you think?

I think what they mean is that people feel strongly about their beliefs and don't want to accept just half of what they want. I believe that "happy mediums" can be reached, but I know plenty of people that don't agree with me at all.

In general, compromise is often necessary. Politically speaking, there are a lot of things on which we should not compromise. Our rights, as given by the Constitution, for example, should NEVER be compromised away.

I wish more people would actually get involved in politics, because if enough people don't speak up, and just sit back and let things happen, then there is nothing we can do about it!

I am by no means saying to compromise away our Constitutional rights but as Tuner said, happy mediums need to be made. We cannot go into politics with an all or nothing attitude like we have been for the last 40 or 50 years. It isn't my opinion versus yours, it is making things better for everyone which involves compromise.

I am probably not political enough to make any intelligent comments here. But if compromise is not the answer then what is? If neither side agree then it is a stale mate and nothing changes anyway.

What winds up happening is that whatever political party winds up in power then calls all the shots for as long as they have that power, and then when the other party is finally able to step up (because their voters get sick of the other party being in power and finally show up to vote) they do the SAME thing because they've been "wronged" for so long that THEY don't want to compromise.

Which is exactly why compromise NEEDS to happen! Nothing gets done because they are too busy working against each other to work FOR us. If the founding fathers could see us now I think they would be disappointed in how the system worked out.

I don't think that makes any sense at all. Compromising is what makes everything work, it makes us all get along (better than we would if we only wanted it our way at least). I don't see how that would work out.

DaMan, I didn't think it made much sense either but most of the political pundits spew a lot of ignorance, stupidity and hatred. It is unfortunate that some people actually use them as their source of information and news.
