When I'm driving down a hill, I see so many people riding their brakes instead of just shifting into a lower gear. I don't get it----don't people want to avoid having to replace their brakes so soon?
Oh really? I thought it's one of the basic things taught in driving schools. There are even reminders in some downhill roads to shift to low gear. It isn't about brake pads alone. It is about general safety. A low gear is a "natural" break.
Right. Shifting into a lower gear slows the engine rpm down which naturally holds the vehicle back, so to speak. Riding the brakes can overheat them and cause them to malfunction.
That's not a good way of driving your car. I agree with Mack, it's not just about the brake pads, it's about your safety. There is always time when your foot gets tired and you don't respond as soon as you are supposed to.
My brother says he'd rather replace his brakes than his engine - that's why he doesn't use low gear for hills. I always use low gear for hills when there's snow, but rarely in nice weather.
