Setting up a Home Auto Fix-it shop

I have a son who is really into cars. We have always changed our oil and dealt with our tires ourselves, but we would now really like to get into some other jobs. These need more equipment, I know. We have a couple of older cars, which we would like to refurbish. Can anyone on this forum give me any ideas about what we would need for a basic shop? We have an old barn that is fairly big that would be perfect for this type of shop. Ideas?

My father-in-law does some of this sort of thing. He has one of those air tools, and it is a great help, especially for stuck bolts and things like that. Also, if you don't already have the platforms that you drive up onto, you will certainly want those.

I think first I would work on the barn itself. I would think about the space you need, the flooring as well as weatherazation of the barn itself to make sure you can keep it warm enough for year round work. Once you do that then you can use a basic list of tools to think about storage for tools and parts. Also where would the office go?

Thanks Coup for your suggestions. I have, as a matter a fact already winterized the barn. The back of the barn has underfloor heating, but the front just has an old cement floor at the moment, in case I need to make major changes to the flooring where I will actually work on the cars. The back portion, I'm going to use more as a workshop.
