Tire Pressure

How often do you put air in your tires and how do you check if they need air? I put air in mine when they feel low, but I don't make an effort to check them with a gauge.

My wife's tire seem to always have a very slow leak so I bought a portable air compressor which attaches to the outlet in the car. When I put it on her tires, the pressure shows up. I try to check every few weeks.

I try to keep 32 p.s.i. of air in each tire, and I check them with a guage about every 2 or 3 weeks. I do a lot of interstate driving, and a tire low on air is more likely to blow out than a tire that has the correct pressure. But yes, when I've been in a hurry, I've been know to squeeze the top of the tire with my thumbs to see if it felt too soft or too hard.

I take my truck in to have my tires rotated and balanced about every 3 months. They always check them then and fill them if needed. Unless I think it looks low or feels low, I never check them myself.

My brother worked as a tire analyst for a big-name tire company for several years, and told me that you should check the air pressure in your tires on a regular basis, because uneven air pressure in the tires can cause a myriad of (expensive) things to go wrong with the car. I check the pressure in my tires every two weeks and just so I won't forget, I do it on payday. ;)

I normally let the guys at the auto place check and fill them when I get my oil changed unless one of the tires looks low. The last time I tried to do it myself I think I let more air out of the tire than put air in.
