When is it too late to learn to drive?

I know a woman who is in her 40's and never got her license. She never really needed one either. Now she is in a situation where I really believe her life would be better if she could drive. She says she is too old to learn to drive. I do not agree. What can I say to help her change her mind?

There are a lot of older people who did great things, but I'm not sure she would equate any of their accomplishments with driving. I think if she doesn't want to learn, you probably won't be able to persuade her. If she can manage to get herself from one place to another, maybe it's better to just let her handle it her own way.

I had an aunt who learned how to drive when she was in her 50's. Her husband had started to have quite a few health problems and she knew she had better learn before he got too sick to teach her. She was a much better driver than he was.

It depends on the person, really. If she finds someone she is comfortable with and who can ease her anxiety, I don't see why it shouldn't work out, but otherwise it may never happen.

I know someone who, her first time on the freeway, got into an accident. To this day, she refuses to drive on freeways and asks someone else to do it when necessary.

If she doesn't want to learn you probably cannot change her mind unfortunately. I personally do not think you are ever too late to learn to do anything.
