Why travel in packs?

Why do so many bikers find every other biker in their town and travel around with them? I admit it is kind of cool to see so many in a row, but it seems unnecessary and like they would be easily split up. Instead of trying so hard to stay in a group, why can't they just have fun and drive freely?
Of course, this may only happen in my town. =]

Safety in numbers. The likely hood of being seen is great with numbers.

I've seen many bikers alone and in groups. I love to watch a bunch of them driving, it's just neat. I think a lot of them do runs together and such to raise money for good causes.

My brother was a biker. He and his buddies liked to ride together just because they could. They can be side by side on their side of the road without bothering anyone. You cannot do that if you are driving a car now, right?

It is much safer in numbers. A family member of mine was alone and hit by a car a couple weeks ago. Nothing that he did wrong, the driver was on there cell phone and not paying attention. He is OK now but the bike was totaled. Good thing he was wearing a helmet.
