Do you haggle?

When purchasing a vehicle, do you make it a practice to haggle with the seller on the price or do you just accept the price as originally stated? If you haggle, how do you go about it?

O heck, yes, I haggle, and all the moreso if it's a dealership I'm negotiating with.

If you've ever been to Mexico, it's much the same as haggling with vendors. The stated price, say, is 22,900: hit the b@st@rds at 17,500 ,only go up by 100 bucks each round, and be prepared to walk.

Always, I will haggle down any price if given the chance. Why should I pay more when I really do not need to? There is a difference between paying full price and saving a few bucks.

Definitely, for a car! I've heard of people who go into regular stores and haggle. I can't imagine doing that, myself, but it sometimes nets them some really good deals!

I think vehicles is one thing that is expected to be haggled upon, unless they say firm. Although some who say firm still haggle.

I had a dealer tell me to stop contacting them when I was haggling. But then again, they still e-mailed me back asking if I found a vehicle.

Oh, I've done that.... haggled over stuff in a store.... and successfully, too, I might add. A little elbow grease can go a long way and save you a lot of money.

When the engine in the Fiero GT 'went', I sourced another engine: between the purchase of the engine, and the installation, I got out of it for less than 3K... and drove the car another 5 years before selling it. I haggled with the dealership when I bought it (used) and purchased it for $1500 below what it stood them.

While I can't do that sort of thing EVERY time, I sure the Hell make the effort: my wallet is often grateful. :)

I've done that too, usually if I'm buying a large quantity of items. I walk into Lowes and say I want a pallet of something, what kind of price can you give me, and see if they will discount it. My dad has tried it when buying fridges and such.

I am horrible at haggling so I don't do it. My husband tries to haggle, but he is not good at either, so we end up walking away nothing. I wish there was a course you could take in how to haggle (body language, tone of voice, the right things to say), there should be courses that will help in everyday life in school.

I've done it successfully just the once. The trouble is that there is often a number of other people looking to buy, and hence they say fine-you don't want to pay the price, I'll sell to someone who does.
