Best car for snowy roads

What's the best car out there for driving on snow-packed roads? I am always seeing fancy 4x4s in the ditches, along with jeeps and SUVs, and the usual assortment of tiny weightless 2-door imports.

Any recommendations?

If you're interested in a car specifically, here in the mountainous west, lots of people swear by Subaru. I think the company is Scandanavian, so that's a good indicator they know about driving in snow.

I cannot really say what the best vehicle is. But I see a lot of people with 4x4's thinking because they have a 4x4 they can do 50mph+ on a road with snow. Yeah it will help, but you have to stay in reason and drive smart.

Personally, I would say something like a Hummer. The original, not the 2nd or 3rd, but that big hunky box of a truck that is made for the off road and gets maybe 8mpg. Why you ask? Well, they are heavy, wide tire base, made for off road, and most important, slow. You are doing going fast at all.

I would think that if you are looking for a car and not an SUV, a mid size front wheel drive car would work best in the snow. The tires are able to grip and pull rather than having the back of the car, which is lighter than the front, push your car forward. If you don't watch your speed though you will end up in the ditch no matter what vehicle you are driving.

Plus, regardless of which car you choose, you need to make sure you use snow tires. If it is allowed where you are, and there is a lot of snow, you might even consider chains.

I'll take a car over an SUV any day, when it comes to snow. I'd prefer a standard, too, because I find them easier to "rock" (it must be a generational thing, 'rocking' cars in snowbanks, most folks over 50 seem to know something about it).
