Both Window Handles Broke Off

The inside door handles of my truck broke off. We have to roll the window down and reach to the outside to get out of the truck now, and it's getting to be pretty "old." I want to repair it myself, but I've never done anything of that nature. Can someone give me some tips about how to do it?

Have you looked for replacement handles, from either a company that sells new parts, or a salvage yard. I had a Toyota van once and one of the outside handles tore up. I replaced it with one from a local junk yard.

I would get that fixed asap, what if you need to get out of the truck in a hurry? If you haven't got a manual to help I would just take it to the shop.

Yeah, I'd definitely get that repaired. You never know when something might happen that you have to get out really quick. That could turn out into a very dangerous situation.

You can likely source the necessary parts from a wrecker; the local library will have the overhaul manuals on it's shelves so you've a diagram to follow. It's a simple lever system, which why slim-jims are still used to pop the locks on vehicles that require it.

If you get a manual, it will be your best friend. I use mine a lot-I couldn't be without it in fact. There's a lot of little things that I end up doing that I'd struggle to do without my manual.

I got the manual and found the handles at a local junk yard. I'm ready to get them installed and plan to do it next week. Does anyone have any tips for doing the job myself?

When ours broke, we got a manual and the part and put it in ourselves. It wasn't really that difficult; I think the hardest part was getting the panel off the door (or, maybe, getting the panel back ON!). If you look at the manual and think you can't handle it (no pun intended!) you can always take it to a shop.

I heard that getting the panel off and back on is the hardest part of the job and that's true. One of my handles broke of and getting the handle on is pretty easy. Getting the panel on right can take some time, though.
