I was wondering what type of license would I need if I were to drive one of the small school buses. There are quite a few openings in the city where I live, and I am thinking I might be able to handle that type of job.
I do not remember off hand but I know most places will test you if you are coming up to the point of needing a renewal. It happened to a buddy of mine and while he aced it, he said it felt harder than the first time he was tested.
I think you should have a heavy vehicle driving license for driving a school bus or any traveling bus, you should also pass the test of driving a heavy vehicle.
Most places in the USA require a CDL for drivers of school buses and other vehicles larger than a 15-passenger van. There were some states who used to allow church bus drivers to just have a regular license, but I think most have dropped that exemption.
You are required to get a certain type of license. I think CDL is correct but don't quote me on that. I'm pretty sure you'll also have to go through a background and criminal check to make sure you can be around kids.
