I had a '77 Buick Regal once that the head gasket blew, and even though my uncle, who is a master mechanic, fixed it, the car was never right again. As soon as you'd change the oil, within a hundred miles or so, that oil was as black as black ink. I know he did the job right. I think if I had to do it all over again, I'd find another engine to put in it. That's just me.
