Describing Engine Sounds

Am I the only one who feels like an idiot when I'm getting my car serviced? I'm standing there at the counter telling him about a "wocka wocka" sound in my rear end, or a "kachunka" when I hit the brake. And don't even get me started on what it sounds like when it's trying to start but won't.

Best of all is when my 5-year old nephew comes along and he's like "No Auntie, it's not a squawking, it's more of a squeaking. Fine. Let him explain it all. He probably understands it all better than I do anyway.

I wish I had him to help me! I am not good at describing much of anything and never have been. Description is not part of my genes. I do my best, but I sound like an idiot, too.

And it always seems that you can never get the car to make the same sound when you take it to the shop. I had a new Nissan truck once and the gears were shuddering, but when I took it to the shop, I couldn't get those gears to shudder for nothing!

There must be a trigger in the parking lot that temporarily heals all automotive problems, similar to the trigger in the doctor's office parking lot that drops your child's fever, eliminates his cough, and dries up his runny nose. At least until you cross the same trigger on your way out and all those symptoms start up again.
