Diagnostic Car Computer

I once saw someone pull out a small Toshiba laptop in his car and open up a program that showed him all kinds of information about what was going on with his car on his recent drive. He said he uses it when he races as well to look for things he can improve in the car. Anyone know any programs like this, and how to go about hooking it up to a car? I can imagine a lot of uses for it that aren't related to racing!

I don't know of any offhand, but that certainly would be a very useful thing to have! We use our laptop in the car all the time for GPS and such, so software of this sort would be right up my alley!

I know that Carley Automotive has a software program that lets you diagnose automotive problems from your computer. I wonder if the guy you saw had some kind of sensors in his car. Was he looking at his car specifically or a general car guide?
