Helmet or Not?

Our state repealed the mandatory helmet law quite a few years ago. I'm one of the only holdouts that still wear helmets if I even go around the block. They ARE heavy and make you sweat but I would rather arrive alive and have hat hair than not to wear it and lose my brains on the pavement. How about you?

Both my parents wear theirs. I got to give them credit as it gets hot here in Florida. I see some people around here riding around with flip flops, shorts, no shirt and no helmet. I would hate to see when they crash.

I am for helmets as well. I would rather travel uncomfortable than to loose my life by being on the road. Besides, helmets just take a bit of getting used to and eventually they become common day practice.

My parents wear theirs too. It's a law here in NY that you have to wear a helmet when riding any motorcycle, ATV, etc. I can't imagine not wearing it.

People without helmets are idiots, sorry buts true. No matter how hard your head is or how thick skinned you think you are, pavement is harder. I have no pity for people that are in wrecks without helmets, easy choice, but many are dumb about what they choose.

I'll go for wearing helmet because it's the safest way to protect myself from head injuries. I used to wear my helmet either for motorbike or bicycle. I salute to local authorities who issued tickets to road violators especially thos driving without helmet. It only means that they are doing their job.

Some people are stupid enough to ride without helmets just to look cool on the motorbikes. I would rather look hot on my bike and stay alive. :D

I know they can be hot and uncomfortable but I'm an old EMT. I've seen some of those who don't wear their helmets. Those are the casualties we scrap up off of the pavement more often than not. I don't know if people who don't wear their helmets have a death wish or what but I'd rather get to my location alive.

I am all for wearing helmets but I also just have to add this little tidbit after an experience I had Thursday. I went to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert where a lot of the attendees were riding motorcycles. When we were leaving, it was 11PM, very dark with lots of traffic. The road leading out of the venue is a two way street and cars were lined up for miles waiting to get out. All the motorcyclists however, cut around the cars riding ON THE WRONG SIDE of the road because they could squeeze through. Several times they had to cut back over because a car was coming. I'm sorry but all the helmets in the world won't save you from stupidity like that!

My take

I don't think it makes you cooler to not wear the helmet. Lets say two guys on a motorcycle drive up to me and both give me a wink (just using imagination here) if i had to chose the one with or with out the helmet I would chose the one with a helmet. Even if i can't even tell what he looks like he already has my respect because I know he values life over "looking cool"

Definitely wear the helmet. Just yesterday I witnessed a motorcycle crash. It was terrible. Luckily the driver was wearing a helmet and lived.

To drive a motorcycle and not wear one is crazy! It is almost the same as stepping in front of a bus. You might as well.

Please wear one. I know what I am talking about. I lost my youngest brother to a motorcycle accident. He was not wearing a helmet. They said that had he been wearing one, he would not have had injuries THAT serious.

Making the wearing of helmets voluntary? I'd rather be sweating than potentially suffering a fatal head injury. That's what helmets were designed for. The amount of people I see riding motorcycles without them just boggles my mind.

We were on I-64 the other day and a guy passed me going at least 90 MPH. I was set on cruise at about 75 and we were keeping up with traffic when this guy comes up on the side of us all. He was out of sight before we knew it. Idiot! No helmet and running fast. No leathers either.

Yes! Before I got put in my chair I responded to emergencies. I've seen lives saved by helmets, and lives lost to vanity or stubborness. Wear it!
