Horses

I read in another forum that someone wondered why we don't use horses instead of cars for transportation if we really concern about the environment. While it sounds like a good idea, I don't think horses is a good alternative to cars.

I firmly believe we "have the technology" to operate using cleaner methods, and that we could have been doing so at least 50 years sooner than now.

While it sounds like a great and green idea, I don't think it's practical today. Riding horses and carriages is something from the past. Moreover, taking care of horses is not always cheaper than maintaining a car.

They are greener that is for sure. But what you travel in a day in a vehicle will take you a week in a horse most likely. You can drive cross country in a few days, where going cross country on a horse way back when took months.

A seeing eye HORSE?

OK, I'm not saying it's not possible, but of all the animals to train to assist, you have to choose one that big and with that much of an appetite?

Horses don't have the range, require "fuel" daily (food for them is somewhere between 200 and 500 per month, depending on where you live), and are like a big dog when it comes to cleaning up after them.

Then again, a horse can get me into places a vehicle can't.

Yes Jansen, bicycles are a good and cheap alternative to horses. But, as a bicycle runs on human power, it should be designed to be more energy efficient.
