So, did you go to driving school, or did you steal the family car and teach yourself? My dad actually taught me how to drive, but not until I was almost 30 years old! I did not grow up around my dad. I actually lived in a big city, while he lived in the country. I never needed to drive, because public transportation was just so convenient. But when I decided to move to the country, I realized that I was getting nowhere fast! I know that I could have went to a driving school, but they are so expensive! So, I let good old dad teach me.

My mom had let me drive in circles in empty parking lots when I was a teen and we were living in the city - when we moved to the mountains, and I reached the age where I could get a license, my stepfather bought a stick shift car for me, put me in a Home Depot parking lot, and gave me some basics then left me to my own devices.
To get the actual license, I had to take a few classes with a private driving teacher and then take the DMV road test, but that was all on automatic cars and was SO different from mountain driving with a stick, lol.

My dad insisted that I take the young drivers training class that was offered at my high school. He also wouldn't let me practice on his car. I had to practice on my brother's car. I know that the course was very good, and I learned a great deal. Having people learning to drive from their fathers, mothers or someone not qualified worries me. It seems that those people will just learn the errors others don't even know they are making.

We ave no choice where I live. If you want your license you have to take drivers training classes through the high school. You can't get a permit any other way. My dad did my driving hours with me though.
Wow, a tractor and a half ton pickup when you were 10?! I guess out in the fields that's pretty cool. A good way to get a "feel" for driving.

To me, that is a silly statement. Our parents are not unqualified to teach us! They teach us most of what we know, starting from birth! What makes a person "qualified" in your opinion? A piece of paper? Knowledge and experience should be enough to "qualify" a person to teach his or her child.
My mom taught me to drive. I am a good driver. I am teaching my children.
I took drivers ed in school and my father used to take me for trips and let me drive him around. To learn stick my brother drove me up the back parking lot of the mall and then I drove around it. Once I got my first car which was a stick shift, I drove it around the neighborhood.
