International driver's licencing

I was told that an "international" drivers' licence does not exist as it once did, and that the folks that have taken the trouble to obtain one are finding themselves on the short end of the stick and are not being given parody/equivalency by some countries.

Is there an international standard for driver's licences? And who decided what that is?

Good question. When you go on holiday, how likely is it that an American drivers license will be acceptable to drive a hire car in a foreign country?

As long as you have a driver's license from somewhere, isn't that sufficient? Why would anyone need an international one?

(I think you meant parity rather than parody.) I agree with Marvin, but the law is not always reasonable. That said, according to a quick search, most countries DO recognize an American driver's license as valid.

When I was in London we just ended up using our home license and had vacation paperwork, nothing fancy at all. I am sure its different if you plan to relocate though.

What is vacation paperwork? I mean, in so far as driving abroad is concerned.

I agree that really all you need is a full valid license, and to be of age as young drivers often cannot hire a car.
