New age mechanics

I my father's day, mechanics were men (or women) who had a feel and the touch for cars and a love for the sound of a good engine. They learned on the job and were experts in the types of cars they worked on. They told you if they couldn't figure it out and maybe sent you to someone else who worked on your car. Now mechanics are taught to be mechanics. Which do you prefer working on your car?

I want someone who loves the car to work on it. If it's just a job, good enough might be all they're looking for. And I can't stand being ripped off. Like mechanics who say they changed a part and charge for it; but didn't.

I think the difference is that cars are so much more complex now. You have to put the car on a machine to see what the problem is. Back in the old days they could tell from listening to it. With all this technology it is harder to do that.
