Selling a parking spot in your driveway

I recently visited my old college for a football game, and was intrigued to see local fraternity houses offering paid parking in their driveway. They were charging up to twenty bucks per spot, and they were getting some customers. Has anyone else heard of this being done? It really makes me wish I had some real estate in a big city!

I have seen this yes. Where I live it is very congested in certain areas, like around the beach. Sometimes it is easier to just pay someone at their residence to park so you aren't so far from the beach. I have also seen people that you can pay and they will watch your car in the parking lot to make sure no one breaks in or does anything to it.

Yep, even in a small town, when there are special things going on and parking is at a premium, some of the people who live there will request payment to use their driveway, and they often get it. It would be nice, wouldn't it!

I haven't heard of paying someone to watch your car, that sounds kind of like private security. It seems like people are finding ways to charge for every possible thing these days. I guess it might be worth it though, especially if you have a really nice car.

I've seen this several times all over the place. We have local craft fairs and people that live close charge a few bucks for people to park. I've also seen it at concerts and sporting events.

If I lived in a college town that had events I would sell a space in my driveway. Some people would rather pay $20 than risk getting towed.

It's very common where I live. There is a lot of car thefts and break ins in South Florida, so if you go to the beach or somewhere popular, but park in a not so good area, you can pay for the protection. It's usually just some homeless person or someone like that. They do a good job too, because they stay all night.

That's pretty interesting Lamboguy. I like the idea of helping a homeless person while keeping your car protected at the same time. Philio I agree with you too. I got a couple random parking tickets when I was going to college, and it wasn't even during a crowded time like a game. I can see why people would pay the $20 to avoid any chance of making a parking mistake.

Great idea. My sister does this with her house. She lives directly across from a high school, and the kids pay to park in her driveway. She can care less if they do as long as they leave by the time she is back from work, which is the evening.

I would think long and hard about it. But knowing my luck, if I could sell a parking spot, something would happen and I would be getting sued.

I have not heard of this, but when I was growing up, my two elderly aunts, who didn't drive, had a vacant garage that they rented to a neighbor up the street who couldn't afford to build one.

My boyfriend did this one time with my yard. It was big yard with a lot of parking. There was a large event going on just blocks away. I was embarrassed at first because I never heard of anyone doing this. I thought it might be illegal too. But it turned out to be a good idea. We made some extra bucks.
