Selling Your Junk Car

My friend has a car that really needs to be put out to pasture! Someone told her that she could sell it for scrap. Is it worth doing that?

I sold my one car for scrap and got a couple hundred for it. I know my brother has done this several times as well. It is probably worth it if it is unsellable to anyone else. A couple hundred is better than nothing right?

There are people who do this for a living. Selling scrap metal has become a lucrative business now that the economy has tanked. Getting a couple of hundred out of a car or a $1000 or so out of a half ton pickup full of scrap metal makes it worth looking for.

If the car still runs, there might be someone who wants it, but if your friend doesn't think he/she can sell it to someone, then sure...better than nothing. I'd salvage any sell-able parts on it though and see if he/she could sell them on ebay or craigslist - she'll get more from them from people looking for parts than from scrappers.

I think scrap is a perfectly viable solution! And definitely more lucrative than our solutions have been - when our cars don't work well anymore, we usually end up *giving* them away!

I think it's worth it, because at least you can get rid of the car, and you can get some money for it. I think it's a win-win.

I know that here if you can drive a junk car into a scrap yard dealer, you will get more money for it than if you have to have it towed. Basically it is still running, so it has more a few salable parts besides the scrap.
