Snow and getting stuck

One thing that I haven't read about, or seen, in many years, is something that used to quite common: 'rocking' a car that's stuck in snow to get it out again.

Perhaps because it's easiest done in a stick-shift, and the bulk of the drivers today own automatics, it's fallen out of favor?

I do put the car in reverse and then drive to try to rock it out of a mess. If my tires are spinning then I just reverse the car and get out of the snow. I hate winter driving! I was stuck in my daughters friends driveway last weekend.

I don't know why it's not used anymore. I got stuck a few weeks ago and went and got a bucket of sand from my garage, didn't even think to try anything else as I was on my drive.

O wow, I haven't heard of anyone rocking a vehicle to "un-stick" it in snow in years, and yet it was a mandatory part of driving lessons if you were taking them in the winter months.

Then again, when I took driving lessons, if you didn't take your road test on a stick shift you were slapped with an "automatic only" designation on your licence!

I didn't know there were automatic only designated licenses. That's interesting. I use the forwards and reverse way of getting unstuck. It's easier in a stick shift, but Ive had good luck with it in automatics, too.
