I saw a car yesterday that bad blue flames painted on it with what looked like spray paint. Interestingly enough it did not look that bad because it was an old beater anyway! Still seemed odd.
I have seen people use spray paint as well and I really think that it looks bad. It is usually the people with older cars who use it, still when I see it, it makes me cringe.
If you have an old car and you do not have a lot of money then spray paint can be the way to go. You have to do it right though. I have seen it done really well and really bad. Just depends on how it is done.
I have seen some amazing and impressive "beater art" from time to time. It kind of makes sense for beaters. I wouldn't want to invest a bunch of cash on a paint job for a beater.
