Transporting alcohol in a car

Does anyone know much about the laws regarding carrying alcohol in your car? I've heard that you can't have open containers in the car, but I'm more curious about closed containers. If I'm leaving the store with beer by myself, I usually just put it in the front seat out of laziness. I often wonder if I should be putting it in the trunk, or at least in the back seat.

Not sure to be honest. I just make sure to keep it out of reach. Open containers go in the trunk if I have one, or in the back seat floor on the passenger side.

I would be sure to put it out of reach too. I would never leave it in the front seat. I would use the trunk or behind the drivers seat. I know you can't have an open container and that is the only law I think there is.

As far as I know, as long as the containers are closed it does not matter where you put them. I don't transport alcohol as a general rule but that's what I have always heard.

To my knowledge, the laws are about open containers. No one is going to get in trouble for buying alcohol in the store and taking it home (I would assume it's in a store bag). Drive the speed limit and you shouldn't have any worries. I would never leave it in the car beyond that drive.

Wine and liquor bottles would be in store bags, but they don't bag large cases of beer. It sounds like most are in agreement that the laws are only for closed containers, so I'm probably good. I agree that if I had an open container for any reason, it should be in the trunk. I would never take a chance with something like that.

If its beer or liquor and I am in charge of bringing it to the party I always carry it in the trunk. I guess its just something that stuck with me for years as its how the adults in my family always did it.

One reason I hate putting stuff in the trunk is because it slides around a lot. My car has a pretty big trunk, so it's hard to prevent this. If it weren't for that, then I would use the trunk more often. The adults in my family also used to do that though, so it's probably the safest bet when it comes to alcohol.

Most of the time I am carrying liquor home, it either has to be in a closed container or out of reach completely. I prefer not clashing with the authorities because of a very avoidable situation.

Donald that is true to a point, items only slide around whey they are not secure. I have a double netting system back there just for this reason (I have broke things in the past, lesson learned). The first is a small netting for things that are smaller than say a foot tall/wide, the larger goes over 1/2 the trunk size and its for my groceries.

I think, like the others, that as long as it's a closed container it should be okay to keep it in the seats and not in the trunk. I would make sure it's out of reach just in case though, and that it's in a bag or box that is obviously unopened.
