Uneven tread wear on my new tires

I bought new tires last year around Christmas time. It's been a really rough year for me. I did not notice that my front tires are showing uneven wear. The insides are wearing much faster than the outside of the tire, and my back tires aren't wearing at all. I'm annoyed I missed it because I got off road tires at $260 each and I don't exactly have $500 to replace them. :mmph:

Do you know what the cause of the uneven wear is? If they are not too far gone, perhaps you can extend their useful life by remedying the problem---hope so!

Uneven wear is usually caused by the tires being under inflated or overinflated. I would take your car in and see if they can check your tire pressure.

Sorry you're dealing with that. I hope that you can find a way to fix that and save the tires. Do you suppose switching them (left to right and vice versa) would help any?

FB makes a good point, there. If you check the pressure, you may find that it is off and you can adjust enough to fix the wearing. Worth checking!

You need a front end alignment at the very least. The sooner the better. If your lucky all you need is an alignment. Going over a deep pot hole is all you need to cause your wheel alignment to be off.
Hopefully that's all you need, but if you are not as lucky you probably have to replace some front end parts and or suspension parts such as tie-rods, ball joints, shocks or struts or stabilizer bars just to name a few parts that could be the cause of your tires being worn out fast.

Thanks everyone! I just completed a whole wheel hub assembly. What a bear of a job that was...but that's a thread for another time! Now that the truck is back together I'm going to get the front end aligned and see if that was the issue. Hopefully that was the cause of the uneven tread wear. I have enough tread to not need to replace the tires for at least another year or so.

Nice to know about potential tread wear

I am glad to know that new tires, too, can have uneven tread wear. I'm in the market right now for new tires and will make darned sure I have the alignment right so I won't have to shell out this much money before it's time to buy tires again. I have half of the tire still good.

I had the same problem. My husband had to do some work on the front end, but before he could get to it, I had a blow out and needed to buy new tires right away. Once he finished the work, I put off getting an alignment. It really affected the wear on my tires.

How wore does a tire need to be (on the side) before its considering bad? Some jerk almost ran me off the road on a narrow street today and I smudged up the right side of both tires off the curb trying to avoid him.

Yeah it's bad enough to have to buy new tires. But then to find out that there are other problems causing uneven wear is even worse. I know what it feels like as I let things go longer than I should have and my tires didn't last nearly as long as they should have.
