What to do in a fender bender...

I figured everyone knew what information to exchange if the police weren't necessary. Yesterday my sister called me, she had just been rear ended at a red light. She was freaking out, asking what to do. She's been driving for 10 years!

Would you know what steps to follow?

I was in a wreck not too long ago and I completely drew a blank. I was freaking out, not sure what to do and then it finally hit me that I needed to call the police. Lol.

I think it's quite common for people to forget what to do. It's a strange situation and we're not used to being caught up in something like that. I would be freaking out, that's for sure!

Isn't it just your insurance info and contact info or something like that? I was only in one, and it wasn't my car nor was I the driver. This was also years ago, but was still pretty nerve wracking.

I would get out of the road, get their insurance info and call my mom to make sure that was it lol. I can understand calling someone, it's a stressful situation.

I keep a little notepad in the glovebox for a emergency of any type. The first sheet is listed with my contact information for if an accident were to ever happen to avoid having to find a pen and so on during the aftermath, it does come in handy I gotta say.

If the damage isn't really bad, and neither of us care to have it fixed or tell our insurance, is it ok to just not call anyone, shake hands, and part friends (as it were)? Or is it the law that the police are called even for minor bumps?
