Where do you draw the line with drinking and driving?

I'll admit it, many years ago when I was young and stupid, I would drink and drive sometimes. After I got busted for a DUI once though, I learned my lesson. After that, for several years I wouldn't drive after I had even one drink. These days, I'll have a couple beers here and there, but I never drive if I feel buzzed at all. Where do you draw the line with this?

I would never drive if I had a drink. Not even a single drink-a small beer would stop me driving. I would not take the chance, I would not risk another person's life.

When I turn my keys over before I take a drink. I was hit years ago by a fool behind the wheel who ran a red light and smashed into myself, a friend and her dog. The dog almost ended up threw the windshield and the only thing that saved her was a doggy belt. I have no pity for drunks who face charges/prison/death for their own stupidity.

The law gives a legal limit, but I think unless you have a way to test your blood level (which, I think, cannot be done accurately through *breath*), I think you should let someone else drive if you are going to drink.

I've never driven a car after having even one drink. It's something I am very passionate about, because like many other people I have a personal connection to losing someone to a drunk driver.

I won't do it. I have plenty of options to get home after I drink. We're big on DDs and if the DD decides to drink without telling anyone (which I've had happen) I'll call a cab.

I appreciate the passionate responses against drinking and driving, but honestly I am a little surprised at the mostly unanimous responses too. I see where you all stand and generally agree, but do you actually think it's wrong to have one beer or glass of wine with dinner, and drive after that? I'm sure we all at least know people who do that with no problems. If you're a big person, and you wait a couple hours, your blood alcohol level will be .00 if you have only one drink. Maybe it's always best to not drive if you drink, based on a slippery slope type of argument, but I think having one drink at a restaurant or friend's house can be acceptable.

Like I said, I never drive when I'm not sober. However I can have one light beer and be sober, so I don't feel bad about that. I have never lost someone close due to a drunk driver though, so I understand that probably drastically changes things.

Donald yes I do, any drink can effect anyone, different. Its that simple. One drink for me can be different from one drink from you. I use you as an example since I have been known to drink men under the table before. That is my entire basis, its different for everyone and not doing it is always better than chancing it.

Oh and that personal experience from being hit by someone who actually got out of their vehicle after running the red light (with about 40 other vehicles around us) saying "I know my limits". :)

Like Donald, I was horribly irresponsible as a 20-something when it came to booze and driving.... but understand, that's also 25 years ago now, and the laws and such were far different than they are today (and I lived in a very rural setting).

My cousin was killed by a drunk driver, 3 days after her sweet 16. I have family and friends with (now) adult kids, that were horribly maimed by drunk drivers IN THEIR OWN FRONT YARDS.

British Columbia has a tolerance of 0.05 ... for most WOMEN, that's a sleeve of beer .

And if you're driving after more than one drink, you're to be thanked for the Russian Roulette you're playing with the innocents on the roads around you.

I've been on the scene of too many accidents involving drunks. How it is that the law boys don't get a little aggressive with such folks is beyond me, it has to be tempting!
