Do they still teach hand signals in driving school?

That's great Jason. Would you know if they have it documented somewhere for us to refer to? People with well-maintained cars won't need to bother with this. But those with old and used cars may benefit. Having this knowledge is like knowing morse code. There's no immediate practical use for it...

    Survival Kits

That's a good list to start with. I would add a flashlight and extra batteries, an extra battery for your mobile phone, a match in watertight plastic, and a jumper.

Tire Pressure -- What's the correct one?

I usually set my tire pressure to 30psi, all four of them. But I hear people who advise me to keep the pressure at 28psi during a long drive. What do you think?

Car Driving Safety vs Phone Calls Using the Car Speaker System

Conversing with someone inside the car, especially with someone who sits with you in front, helps in long drives. But conversing with someone on the phone --- even through a hands-free phone --- is something else.

    ethanol-free gasoline

Cool. What's their rationale for not wanting ethanol in gasoline? Just wondering. The only advantage I see, so far, is that you can leave ethanol-free gasoline inside the tank of your car all the way across winter and not worry about anything.

Do they still teach hand signals in driving school?

It just occurred to me that, back when I was a kid, I remember seeing my Dad do hand signals in turning left or right. I couldn't recall the exact situation then. I guess something was wrong with the signal lights then. Do they still teach hand signals in driving school? I don't recall...

    Insurance

That's a valid point. I get this impression now that your sister regularly uses your car. If so, then you need to discuss this seriously with her.

    Cleaning a car in Winter

Cleaning a car during winter isn't about making the car look clean. It is about protecting your car from salt used on ice, as well as from the acid rain that ends up in your car as sticky acid snow.

    Maintaining Car Window Mechanisms

I'm glad I'm not alone. Windows, I admit, used to be the last thing in mind to worry about. That attitude ended when during a hectic day my window wouldn't close. A malfunctioning window was the last thing I needed that time. I actually asked how an "insignificant" part of the car could ruin...

    Your preferred music while driving

For those who listen to music while driving, what sort of music do you normally listen to? I use music to influence my mood. I normally play pop music or rock. During stressful situations I shift to jazz or classical. At times I prefer inspiring religious songs.

Dash Shields -- Do You Have Them?

The only reason why I took notice was when I found out that a college friend is into this business. He is doing very well. That made me wonder :)

Car Driving Safety vs Phone Calls Using the Car Speaker System

I avoid conversing while driving, but that simply cannot be avoided on occasions. I used to have a business partner who loves talking while driving. I always offer to drive the car -- his or mine -- every time we ride together because he's making me nervous.

    Maintaining Car Window Mechanisms

I have no idea how car window mechanisms are being maintained. Do dealerships check them during maintenance schedules? I mean, how do we make sure that they don't all of a sudden "refuse" to close one rainy afternoon in a public parking space.

    Slippers While Driving? So what?

Somehow I'm able to use the pedals with my slippers on without any problem at all . . . except when my feet are wet. In such a case, I step on the pedals with my bare feet. Question is, are there traffic rules that prohibit slippers? Just wondering.

Coffee, news and TV while you wait

Thanks for sharing this FiveSpeed. I love the "free lunch" part :) We make sure we come at 11am to avail of this. Anyhow, Wifi is indeed another attraction that shops can entice us with.

    Cleaning Tires and Wheels

Someone gave me a brush that you connect to the hose. As you brush your tires, water washes away the dirt. This is a simple, yet smart, innovation.

Dash Shields -- Do You Have Them?

I have seen people put dash shields on their dashboards. At first I thought the dash shields were completely unnecessary. It turned out that the dash shield helps the car insulate itself from the heat outside.

Coffee, news and TV while you wait

Hello Guy and Fanbelt! Thanks for your stories :) We have usually associated these "deluxe" stuff to service centers in dealerships. But now, independent shops are getting more savvy. I like that. The innovations give us more pleasant options.

Do You Use Steering Wheel Covers?

I'm glad I'm not alone Fanbelt! Are you comfortable with the fancy designs too? That's the only thing I'm not comfortable with, although I bought one recently with a Donald Duck design. It has been my favorite cartoon character after all :) MustangSally, try it with not-so-costly ones first. If...

    Slippers While Driving? So what?

Sometimes it's just a very short drive to the convenience store. So I wear slippers a lot of times while driving short distances. A friend of mine says I should stop doing that. Better to drive barefooted than with slippers on. Hmmm. I think I saw his point, though I didn't think much...
