Little notebook in the glove box

That record is a great thing to have. I haven't done it yet, but I would love to start the habit now. A record is good for personal reference. It is also something that we can discuss with any technician working on the car, without stretching our memory each time. Cool!

    The color?

Colors are important, indeed. I always choose light-colored cars for two reasons --- they're easily seen during the evening and they reflect the heat during daytime.

    Performance mufflers

This article in this site is interesting: What it seems to say is that the loud mufflers that teens use in their cars do have a function. They improve mileage and engine performance. I used to think those mufflers were installed just to impress people.

Tire Pressure -- What's the correct one?

Thanks for that Max, but what is the recommended tire pressure, really? All I know so far is that for sedans, it's 30psi. Then for vans or pick ups, it's 35psi. Trucks would need 40psi. Please validate. I have not read them from any manual but from conversations with people.

    On-Board Videos - Aren't They Distracting?

Hmmm. That's a good point Tabby. I do listen to audio books. During an exciting part, I do have that slight temptation to pull over as well. But I always tell myself that I'm gonna listen to it again, which I do. But movies are different. Perhaps it's just me. I like movies, generally. Perhaps...

    Remote cars?

I used to play with battery-operated remote control cars when I was a kid. Great hobby. For adults these days, there are larger toy cars with real engines that you can use to race remotely. It should be easy to find others with the same passion. Then you can meet at an agreed day of the week...

My Windshield Wiper Motor Needs Replacement?

Mine isn't a brand new car, but it's a great car. Lately though, the windshield wiper is slow. From "Low" I can get it to "Medium" but I can't get it to "High." Something's busted inside. The technician says I should replace it. Should I follow his advice (the motor isn't cheap) or should I look...

    Too Dangerous

Things simply evolve and we can't help it. Computers for instance no longer just compute. They communicate. Then phones no longer just communicate, they compute. This is an amazing world.

    Prius wagon

That would attract families, that's for sure. Space and fuel economy are two of the major things family people would look for. Have they produced a prototype already? 42mpg is simply impressive.

    Riding brakes

Oh really? I thought it's one of the basic things taught in driving schools. There are even reminders in some downhill roads to shift to low gear. It isn't about brake pads alone. It is about general safety. A low gear is a "natural" break.

Tire Pressure -- What's the correct one?

Hi Mario, that's cool :) I have gone by convention so far, which is precisely why I'm a bit confused. What do the three references tell you about the desired tire pressure?

    Green detailing?

I wonder what you mean by "green detailing." Do you mean waterless? or do you mean using organic materials for cleaning the car? I'm using organic liquid soap to clean my car, but I think it's not what you ask for. You're asking about detailing.

    Changing Spark Plugs

There are two occasions when I check the spark plug: right before long drives, and when I hear something irregular in the way my engine runs. Most of the time, the smooth sand paper smoothens the ride. If symptoms persist -- or so the doctors say -- I consider changing the spark plugs. I'm...

    On-Board Videos - Aren't They Distracting?

Thanks for your inputs guys. Right, it's just like having a CD playing or a radio on. I guess there's no problem if kiddie stuff are being played there. But the moment your favorite movie gets played there, I'm wondering if things would be a bit different :)

Time to take away the license?

If you take your Dad off the road (by talking to him, or through more drastic measures you may consider), what would be his alternative to move around? Would you consider moving him to a retirement village? I think it would be even more depressing for him there.

    Minimum mpg

I can imagine the amount of research and development needed to achieve this. Are you sure about the 30% each year? What I see is that fuel economy cars may have less horsepower. How much horsepower does one really need anyway?

Tire Pressure -- What's the correct one?

It appears 30psi is some sort of "default" pressure of sorts ^_^ I remember driving a friend's van. I knew the tire pressure had to be 35psi. So that's what I told the shop technicians, just to be absolutely sure that I won't be running flat.

Do they still teach hand signals in driving school?

This is a must for bikers, certainly. Unlike cars, the two blinkers are close to each other. On a misty afternoon, those blinkers may not distinguish well from each other. I wonder though if the left and right blinkers of a bike are of the same color. I think it would help if the colors are...

Coffee, news and TV while you wait

Hi Tabby! Perhaps competition among shops there isn't that intense yet :) If a shop decides to be a little bit more exotic in their customer service, do you think that shop would one day get most of the business in your area?

    On-Board Videos - Aren't They Distracting?

I see cars with on-board video connected to a CD player. They're great for families with little kids. Videos have a way of making the kids behave well. But don't you get distracted by the audio of the movies they watch? Just wondering.
