Gas mileage and how to figure

Exactly. When you fill up, make a note of the odometer reading. When you fill up NEXT time, again note the odometer, and ALSO note how many gallons you just put in. Divide the miles (subtract the old reading from the new one) by the gallons, and voila! Miles per gallon.

    Gas prices - conflicting thoughts

The problem is, they have us over a barrel (pun more or less intended). Most of us *have* to buy gas to get to work, and at the same time, we can't yet afford the electric or hybrid vehicles that would lessen our dependence on the gas.

    Low car loan rates

Car loan rates are the lowest in decades, according to this article from the Sun Times. Do you think that will encourage people to buy new cars, or do you think that's what they're hoping but they're wrong?

    Gas prices - conflicting thoughts

I checked the news for gas price information. I found an article from Cincinnati saying gas prices are expected to continue to rise. There was another article, from Atlanta, that says gas prices are expected to stabilize. Who should we believe?? Gas here is over $3.00 a gallon, already.

    He taught me something!

That's good information! Thanks! Do you suppose the DampRid that is available at Walmart would do just as well? I have a son who is bad about leaving the window open when he's been driving (even when it's cold outside!) and the interior of my vehicles have been damp way too often!

    Brakes out

Thankfully, yes; the 15-passenger van. Of course, it's a gas guzzler, but at least it gets me around. Took the car in for repair today, and apparently it's been leaking for a while and the booster was half full of brake fluid!! Obviously, that had to be replaced, too. What a mess!

    Laptops in cars

We live in a small town and the crime is much less here. I know people around here who regularly leave their *car keys* in their car! I'm thankful that I don't have to worry as much about it (though we do not leave a lot of important things in there, and we DO lock it).

    Wheeless cars?

I can't help but wonder about the downsides. I know there would be plenty of pros for a vehicle like this (not even counting it's awesome looks!) but nothing is perfect.

    Driving through high water

It seems like it would be even more dangerous for an electric or hybrid vehicle. Since the driver would not be grounded, there shouldn't be any worry about shock; but damage to the vehicle is almost guaranteed.

    Brakes out

Man! Wouldn't you know it. Finally got the air conditioner fixed in my '99 Dodge Grand Caravan and the brakes quit. It appears to be the master cylinder. I hate having to keep putting money in this car, but I can't afford to replace it.

    Satellite Radio

That's a great way to do it, Jeepers! We do have satellite radio (XM) and we like it pretty well. I have two main channels I prefer (Pops - which is classical music - and LaughUSA), and my spouse has a few preferred channels as well (mostly talk radio and news).

    Selling Your Junk Car

I think scrap is a perfectly viable solution! And definitely more lucrative than our solutions have been - when our cars don't work well anymore, we usually end up *giving* them away!

    How far do you go?

It depends on which side of the family. My parents live about six hours away, but my inlaws live on the same street. Most often we have holidays with my inlaws!

    Enormous Nissan Recall

At least it's a minor thing, generally speaking. Definitely could have been something worse. An ignition relay ("25 minute fix") is less likely to cause injuries than some things that can go wrong. :)

    10 orphaned cars to drive...

Right - and if they made the amphicar now, it would probably have seals that were a lot better and it might go farther before sinking ;) I wonder if someone will pick it back up?

    Getting Tired of Radio

If you have a portable tape player or CD player, you can get a transmitting device for about $10-$12 from Walmart that allows you to have it send the signal to your FM radio.

    Tesla

Did you know there is a company called Tesla? It is in the process of producing an electric car (which is, to me, quite appropriate! If a company called Tesla is producing a car, it almost HAS to be electric!).

Police tack strip killed my tires!

Wow! Who would have thought that could happen? That's pretty rude of them not to have the end of the tack strip marked to keep people from hitting it. They definitely should have to replace your tires, in my opinion.

    Funny incident

That would be pretty funny to see! I have an amusing story, too - we were driving along behind a delivery type truck whose rear door was open (it laid down to open). The guy hopped out at a stop light to close it and as he was lifting it up, we saw painted on the back "Safety First Services" -...
